Good News
100-Year-Old Holocaust Survivor Honored with OP Award
Sonia Warshawski, affectionately known as "Big Sonia," received the OP Award from the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce at their annual winter meeting on December 5. The award recognizes "ordinary people who do extraordinary things for the community."
Warshawski, who turned 100 in November, survived three Nazi concentration camps, witnessed her mother enter the gas chamber, and was shot in the chest on liberation day. Despite these horrors, she dedicated her life to teaching love over hate. For decades, she worked as a seamstress at John's Tailoring in Overland Park, where she became a beloved community fixture.
"Choose love," Warshawski has told countless students, community groups, and audiences over the years. Her story was captured in the award-winning 2016 documentary "Big Sonia." Kansas City previously declared November 13 as "Big Sonia Day" in her honor.
At 100, she's still spreading her message. A reminder that one person's resilience can inspire an entire community.
